REMAINING COOL, CALM AND COLLECTED DURING A COVID CRISIS
The ongoing Corona Pandemic is a really stressful and anxious time for everyone, in particular those with mental health issues and OCD, as we are advised to isolate and wash our hands.
However, even if you are not someone who typically gets stressed or upset you may feel anxiety for yourself or loved ones, fearful of catching the corona virus, or overwhelmed by the constant “covid updates” on the news and social media.
Hence, it is important for all of us to take care of our mental and emotional wellbeing. Two of the key ways of managing anxiety are through sleep and exercise.
One of the biggest factors is sleep. Not getting enough sleep can cause a negative mood, low energy anxiety, difficulty concentrating and a general inability to function as usual. Recently at Five Star Pharmacy we have noticed an increase in people looking for remedies to aid a restful night’s sleep with the firm customer favourite being the A. Vogel Dormesan.
Dormeasan® Valerian-Hops is a herbal sleeping aid, available online at Five Star Pharmacy, containing tinctures of organically grown fresh Valerian and Hops to aid the restoration of natural sleep where disturbances have been caused by the symptoms of mild anxiety. For trouble dropping off to sleep take 30 drops of Dormeasan 30 minutes before going to bed or for interrupted sleep take 10 to 20 drops of Dormeasan once or twice during the day to help ease symptoms of anxiety – this will also help aid sleep when you retire. If you wake up in the middle of the night, take 30 drops of Dormeasan®.
If you have tried other herbal remedies and have found these to inadequate be assured that fresh herb extracts such as Dormeasan® are liquid herbal medicines made from freshly harvested herbs and can contain higher amounts of active substances. A good night’s sleep will help manage anxiety by keeping you remain calm, cool and collected through the day.

Exercise is so much more for the body than simply a breath of fresh air. The endorphins released trigger a cascade of beneficial reactions for our body including less tension, stress and anxiety whilst simultaneously boosting the immune system and mobilising our lymphatic system. Particularity, if working from home, there really is no excuse during the Corona lockdown with this spell of good weather not to get out for your once daily walk, or even jog, as long as you are following social distancing guidelines and not venturing too far from home.
At Five Star Pharmacy our customers love the Revive Active Joint Care range – it even contains the recently much talked about Vitamin D which was highlighted by TILDA (the Irish Longitudinal Study on Aging) as having a positive impact on reducing acute respiratory tract infections, severity and duration. (Rejnmark et al. 2017; Autier et al. 2017).

One final means of dealing with the anxiety of the Covid-19 outbreak is to employ different mindfulness techniques. I don’t know if you have ever tried to sit in a room and focus on your breath but it is hard! However there are other more “directed” techniques which you can use, such as the APPLE technique where you allow your mind to explore the situation but punctuating it with rational stages – Acknowledge, Pause, Pull back, Let go and Explore, instead of rushing from one thought to another.
